I have decided that the idea I will take forward to create is going to be: 'Me and my vest top' starring Bruce Willis. I have made this decision for the following reasons:
- It is a funny concept that will be fun to work on. (It has been a long running joke that Bruce Willis always wears a vest top in films).
- I have already had a few thoughts for the case, logo and the trailer for this suggestion. (I will document these in my planning posts).
- Bruce Willis is a very famous actor so there should be plenty of material that I can work with.
I am feeling positive now that I have made a decision on which idea to use in my project. I will start the production of my assignment and document my progress and creative thought process throughout.

Research for DVD disk and logo
As the second part of the assignment involves creating a DVD logo / disk cover, I have researched what the standard size should be in order to set up a template to work from.
I have now set up a template for the DVD logo / disk cover in Illustrator. I have taken the specifications for my template from the following:
Wizbit Internet Services Ltd, 12cm DVD Artwork
Templates and Design Specifications, [online] Available at: <http://www.wizbit.net/12cm_dvd_duplication_template.htm> [Accessed 27 Feb 2014]
I have looked at various DVD disks to find out what I will need to include on mine. Although each film has a different disk, there are some things that commonly appear on all of them. I have made the following list so I can use this as a guide when creating my own.
- Title
- Rating
- DVD Logo
- Company Logo
- Picture or image relevant to film
- Copy Protect Logo
- Dolby Digital Logo.
- Disclaimer
As my research has shown that the things listed above are to be included on a DVD disk, I will include them all in my own design.
Things that I want to include on the DVD logo / disk cover are:
- Hearts,
- Pink/red background
- Bruce Willis
- Own company logo, possibly JD Studios.

Research on DVD Inlay size.
I have been looking into the standard Amary DVD insert size. We have been asked to use millimetres when setting up the template in PhotoShop, however I have found the following diagram (in inches) which I have found useful:
Dubs and Dupes.com, DVD Amaray™ Case Wrap Template. [online] Available at: <http://dubsanddupes.com/amaray.php> [Accessed 13 Feb 2014]
On the basis that 1 Inch = 25.4mm, I have the following conversions:
Full Bleed: 279.4mm x 190.5mm
Cut Size: 273.05mm x 184.15
As these dimensions are conversions, I have decided to see if I can find any other documentation to confirm that I am proceeding with the correct dimensions. I have now found the following images:
CD-Info.com, DVD Cases, [online] Available at:<http://www.cd-info.com/packaging/dvd-cases/> [Accessed 13 Feb 2014]
I have also found this information:
Wamp-it.com, Dimensions Specification Design Template, [online] Available at: <http://www.wamp-it.com/library-document/design-guide-amaray-case-14mm-inlay-paper.pdf> [Accessed 02 Mar 2014]
Based on the information that I have found above, I have decided to use the dimensions as follows:
inner 275mm width
inner 181mm height
bleed 285mm (5 mm each side of inner) width
bleed 191mm (5 mm each side of inner) height
cut (2.5 mm between bleed and inner edge) width
cut (2.5 mm between bleed and inner edge) height
I have created a document in Photoshop that is 285mm x 191mm. I have created the guides by selecting menus View > New Guide. I have set up guides to show the bleed area, cut line and safe area. I have also inserted guides to show the spine area of the inlay. I have saved this document and will use it as a guide for the first part of my assignment.

Introduction
Hello,
This is my first of many posts to document the design and implementation process for my assignment. I have been tasked to design and create a DVD/Game case cover, disc cover and 60 second trailer. Throughout this project, I intend to document and justify my decision making and thought processes not only as a record of my actions, but also as an ongoing evaluation of my progress.I will do this for each part of the assignment.
To begin the process, I will start with a brainstorm of ideas to map out the different possibilities. I can then evaluate each idea before making my final decision. At this stage, I have a couple of different ideas that could work well.
Ideas
Animals (Animals Attack?)
One idea is an animal themed feature length DVD set in an alternate reality where animals can communicate with people and live in our society as equals. A brief overview of the plot would be; Animals have lived as people for a long time now, perhaps too long? They rally up and decide to fight back against the humans who treat them as second class citizens. It is decided that the world would be better without humans, so the animals go feral and fight to go back to the 'old times'.
Pros
Machinima
Another idea I have had involves Machinima This would involve capturing images and video clips from a game such as Rift or World of Warcraft. For the plot, I am thinking something along the lines of 'Trials of a Troll' or 'An Elvish Escape' or 'The Dwarven Demise'. I quite like this idea as it would be a fun project.
Pros
Real Actor Comedies
I have also mulled over a few other ideas such as 'Me and my Vest Top' starring Bruce Willis or 'Not another Ashton Kutcher movie' starring Ashton Kutcher. I am evaluating these ideas together initially as I feel they are very similar and if I choose this option for my project, I will look at both ideas separately at that point.
Pros
I have created the mind map below to document my thoughts at this stage:

Pros
- There are lots of pictures and videos online of animals that I could use for this.
- I have a boisterous cat that could provide some entertaining footage for the trailer.
Pros
- I have played these games before so I would be able to use a character that can access some cool looking places for the trailer.
- Built into these games, there are emotes which makes it easier to show the character laughing, dancing or crying etc.
Pros
- For both of these ideas it would be easy to pull clips of both of these famous actors from various videos.
- Both actors have been in enough films to get content together for a funny trailer.
- Use of silly sound effects could add to the humour of this option.
I have created the mind map below to document my thoughts at this stage:
